Who am I ?

jjj

This is a question that we all ask ourselves and it is also one of the most haunting questions that we ask . You are in a point in your life ,that nothing you say or do can answer this question and you will think that this can’t be who I am.

So who am I?

Imagine you are filling out a job application and the simplest question has to be answered. Sure you may know what your first and last name is, you may know where you came from, you may know your age, you may know what race and gender you are, you may know all of that but is that enough? No it’s surely not enough.

For us to answer this question we must write the answer as a story. Our identity starts to develop from the first breath we take which is when we are born and will continue to develop during the years that follow until the day we sadly pass away.

For us to really know who we really are we must know our talents, our interests, our dislikes and likes, we also need to put in our successes and failures so we can learn from them. We also need get out of our comfort zone. True it’s easier said than done but come on do you really want to live the rest of your life not knowing who you really are, what  your true potential is , what  your purpose in life is  and what could have been or not. I know I don’t want to. As I said we need to get out of our comfort zone, we need to asses ourselves daily for us to see what we are capable of and how far we can go. The story doesn’t end there, we also need to realize what brought us to this point and understand it, because the truth is that we are all on a mission of life to discover ourselves because circumstances tend to change and if not that, what is the joy and purpose for us in this world?

Priorities are also an important factor in learning who we are, not only for us to navigate in the world but to also understand why we do such certain things. It is also important to prepare us for a new stage in life and build a stronger character and boost our self-esteem.

Stories will always continue to evolve but none of the stories, not even all of them together will answer the question “who am I”?

Still we can answer a part of this question by our behaviour. For example anger, when we are angry we tend to see everything red, at least for a moment or two. We treat everyone as an enemy and after we are calm we tend to regret anything we have done or said. Another example is when we are needy, we usually tend to grasp and hold onto things, sometimes which are  unnecessarily.

How we behave also depends on what we are giving in society. We tend to behave one way when we are with friends, a different way when we are with family and another way when we are with co-workers. We tend to have different personalities with people we know and people we just met.

One thing that I forgot and it is really important but also stupid is that in today’s society people tend to label us. So what if you are gay, black, Asian, ugly etc… That doesn’t matter. The thing that matters is what you have deep inside you, the real you.

For me to conclude I see it as we are many things and we can be many things. We just need to remember what our values are and keep to them. We also need to remain true to ourselves and know what’s right from wrong, good from bad and if during our journey in life we are feeling that we are losing control of ourselves or not comfortable in the situation you are just take a deep breath, close your eyes and ask yourself “who am I”, is this the real me or is this a fake me?
